I love the idea of #GivingTuesday. It's the perfect thing to counteract all the shopping we've done on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Personally I would rather give my time than money to an organziation but I know it's tough for people to find time in their schedules to volunteer. So if you're looking for a way to do a little good, here's a list of my favorite organizations in the St. Louis area.
First up, Habitat for Humanity St. Louis. Each year, KMOV sponsors Home for the Holidays and it's an incredibly rewarding opportunity to help build a home for a family. You get your hands dirty and feel like your truly making a difference knowing you are helping make a better life for a family. Contrary to common belief, the homeowner is not given the home, they buy it at no-profit for the organization and are given affordable and supportive financing. Giving people the opportunity to own their home helps every one in the community.
The YWCA in St. Louis is an organization that I am proud to be a part of. I recently joined their Young Ambassador Board and I am excited to get more involved. They have a multitude of programs including offering transitional housing for women, working with children through Head Start programs, and helping to eliminate racisim and empower women in our community. Donate here.
Yoga Buzz is a non-profit that not only hosts incredibly fun events around town but they also work to make yoga accessible for everyone. Donations to the group allow for them to provide scholarships to those that cannot afford to practice as well as training for teachers in underserved communities. Donate here.
Anew Nature is a company I recently did a story on and I can't say enough how impressed I am with what they're doing to better the St. Louis community. It started with a simple idea, train ex-cons in interview skills, carpentry, wood working and other basic skills. They work with Mission: St. Louis (another great local non-profit) to help find permanent jobs for men in the communtiy who've spent time in prison. They build incredible furniture and are now expanding to create their own line. This way they can employ more people in their own company. They have a Kickstarter fundraiser happening now. So not only can you give on #GivingTuesday but also get a little something from the campaign. Here's the link.
And finally, if you haven't seen the news, there are massive and devastating wildfires in East Tennessee right now. Several people died and hundreds of homes and buildings have been destroyed. The Smokey Mountains are one of my favorite places in the world and they hold such a dear place in my heart. If you would like to help the best thing volunteers are asking for is money towards the Red Cross. They have received tons of water and supplies but have very little space to store it all. If you would like to donate, the link to the East Tennessee Chapter is here.
Welcome to my blog! Here you'll find a behind the scenes look at the day-to-day life of a TV news reporter. I have a love for food, traveling and all things St. Louis. This is a place for me to write a bit more about my passions.
